About

Namekagon River, Wisconsin — 1670s French Fur Trade, 1840s-1890s Logging, 1968 Wild/Scenic 100-mi St Croix NF. From Namekagon Lake through 98 miles of Bayfield and Sawyer counties, the Namekagon flows as the major tributary to the St. Croix, protected within the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway since designation as a National Wild & Scenic River. The upper 30 miles from the lake to Hayward run intimate through headwater country, while the middle stretch from Hayward to Trego covers 35 miles of classic northwoods corridor. Below Trego, the final 33 miles to Riverside widen considerably with established camping infrastructure managed by the National Park Service. At 480 CFS average flow, the Namekagon runs consistently through Class I-II water, with optimal conditions between 200-800 CFS on USGS gauge 05332000. Namekagon Paddle & Bike provides outfitting services for multi-day trips through the protected corridor, where development restrictions maintain the undeveloped character that earned the designation.
