Tygart River, West Virginia — 1936-38 Tygart Dam, Civil War Grafton, B&O Railroad. Through Taylor and Barbour counties, the Tygart Valley River drops 120 miles from headwater meadows to Class III-IV whitewater in Arden Gorge. At 1,600 CFS average with an optimal range of 800-3,000, the river runs biggest through its 10-mile remote canyon section, where technical drops and continuous rapids demand solid boat handling. Above the gorge, the Dailey to Elkins stretch offers Class I-II water through the upper valley. Below, Grafton to Pruntytown returns to easier Class I-II gradient on the lower river. The Seneca controlled this valley before European settlement, and coal mining with timber operations shaped the watershed through the early 1900s. Elk River Touring Center runs commercial trips, particularly through Arden Gorge. USGS gauge 03054500 tracks flows, and the river holds candidate status in West Virginia's Scenic Rivers Program.
