About

Methow River, Washington — 1811 David Thompson, 1990s-2010s Salmon Restoration, Methow Wildlife Area. From the North Cascades through Okanogan County's mountain valleys, the Methow River drops 90 miles of Class I-III water averaging 1,400 CFS with optimal flows between 800-3,500 CFS. The Methow People maintained trade networks through these valleys for millennia before European contact, and their name persists on the river today. The upper section from Mazama to Winthrop runs Class I-II through mountain valley terrain, while the Winthrop to Twisp stretch continues at Class II through orchard corridor. The most technical water lies between Twisp and Carlton, where Class II-III drops demand attention at higher flows. Below Carlton to the Columbia confluence, the river eases back to Class I-II for the final push. Currently under Wild and Scenic River study, the Methow flows through North Cascades ecosystem habitat. USGS gauge 12449950 tracks conditions, and Methow Valley Outdoor Adventures provides commercial trips on the system.
