The USGS gauge at 02037500 reports an average flow of about 5,200 cubic feet per second, with a historical mean near 4,800 cfs. Paddlers find the river's optimal window between roughly 2,000 and 8,000 cfs across a run that changes character dramatically from top to bottom. The upper valley from the headwaters to Buchanan is remote Class I–II water. Below Balcony Falls, the river drops into a gorge of Class III–IV rapids toward Lynchburg. In Richmond itself, the Class III–IV Falls of the James — from Pony Pasture to Pipeline — form what has become a national model for urban whitewater. The lower James runs Class I–II, tidal all the way to the Chesapeake.

Long before the English arrived, the river sat at the center of two great Native civilizations. The Monacan Nation, Siouan-speaking, held the Appalachian headwaters and the Piedmont. The Powhatan Confederacy, Algonquian, controlled the tidal lower river, its villages clustered along the banks. When English colonists landed at Jamestown in 1607, they renamed the river for King James I. That estuary became the site of the first permanent English colony in North America, and the James served as the highway of colonial Virginia, carrying tobacco downriver to ships waiting in Hampton Roads.

The river carried the Revolution to its close as well. The 1781 Battle of Yorktown, where General Cornwallis surrendered to General Washington and effectively ended the war, played out within the James River watershed. In the century that followed, the 1825–1880 James River and Kanawha Canal defined the region's transportation era, moving goods along a corridor the river had shaped for millennia.

The modern era has been harder-won. In 1975, DuPont Kepone contamination inflicted severe pollution on the James, and recovery took decades. The James River Association, which marked its 50th anniversary in 2023, has documented measurable improvements in water quality, fish populations, and recreational use over that span. The river now sustains rare life again: it provides critical spawning habitat for the Atlantic sturgeon, a fish essentially unchanged across 120 million years, and supports one of the largest bald eagle roosting areas on the eastern seaboard.

Today the James anchors the economies of Richmond, Hampton Roads, and Newport News. The James River Park System — 550 acres of river access in the middle of Richmond — was recognized in 2012 as a national model for urban river conservation, and it draws more than 1.5 million visitors a year. The river holds Virginia Scenic River designation, and Virginia's Department of Conservation and Recreation published a 140-page James River Scenic River Assessment in 2018. Outfitters including Richmond Raft Company run the urban whitewater, while James River Runners handle canoe trips on the upper river.
