About
Winooski River, Vermont — 1609 Champlain, Abenaki Winosinki. The Winooski drains 1,080 square miles of central Vermont, gathering from a confluence of several small streams in the Green Mountains of Washington County before running its 90-mile course to the Winooski River Delta on Lake Champlain in Chittenden County. Rated Class I–III with an optimal window of 500 to 4,000 cubic feet per second, it is a working river with a paddler's variety: the USGS gauge 04286000 reads an average of about 1,800 cfs, against a historical figure near 1,620.
Long before Europeans arrived, the river was a critical Western Abenaki route. As "Winooskituk" — the wild onion river, named for the leeks along its banks — it offered passage through the mountains between the Connecticut valley and the Champlain lowlands. That corridor drew the first Euro-American contact in 1609, when Champlain's expedition worked the timber but did not stay. The 1700s through the 1840s saw extensive Abenaki habitation even as the balance shifted.
After the Revolutionary War, Ira Allen harnessed the Winooski Falls to build sawmills, a forge, and a gristmill in what is now the City of Winooski. Through the nineteenth century the river remained the engine of countless towns, its hydropower driving mills that produced lumber, flour, and other basic necessities. The watershed itself was logged from the 1830s through the 1920s, feeding both the regional timber industry and the railroad expansion; local sawmills and logging drives were the major operators until the old-growth stands were exhausted around 1910, state forestry conservation began in 1915, and state forests took hold in the 1930s. The 1840s through the 1920s brought extensive woolen mills to the corridor as well.
The river's power could also turn destructive. On November 3–4, 1927, the Great Vermont Flood washed away the Winooski River Bridge and struck the Winooski Woolen Mill, a defining event of the industrial era. That legacy still marks the landscape: the Winooski Carbonizing Plant, anchored in the heart of the district, sat under-utilized for more than twenty years before being renovated into commercial and office space. The flooding returned in force in August 2011, when Tropical Storm Irene inundated downtown Montpelier under several feet of water, caused more than $100 million in damage, and reshaped Vermont's approach to flood resilience.
Today the Winooski runs in three distinct characters. From Montpelier to Waterbury it moves as a Class I–II capital corridor; from Waterbury to Bolton it steepens into Class II–III Green Mountain gorges; and from Bolton to Burlington it eases back to Class I–II on its approach to Lake Champlain. Managed under the Vermont Rivers Management Program and the Winooski Valley Park District, the river anchors one of the largest dam-removal and restoration efforts in state history, with conservation work between 2010 and 2024 protecting roughly 80 percent of the watershed from development. A premier brook trout and landlocked salmon fishery and a principal tributary of Lake Champlain, it remains a central destination for canoeing, kayaking, and whitewater rafting in central Vermont.
