About

Winooski River, Vermont — 1609 Champlain, Abenaki Winosinki. From Montpelier through the Green Mountain gorges to Lake Champlain, the Winooski runs 90 miles of Class I–III water averaging 1,800 CFS through Washington and Chittenden counties. The Waterbury to Bolton section cuts the most technical line, with Class II–III drops through narrow gorges where the river sheds elevation toward the Champlain Valley. Above that, the capital corridor from Montpelier to Waterbury flows Class I–II past Vermont's governmental center. Below Bolton, the final approach to Burlington and Lake Champlain mellows back to Class I–II as the gradient flattens. At optimal flows between 500–4,000 CFS, the Winooski offers unusual variety for a single watershed — technical whitewater in the mountains, touring water through the valleys. USGS gauge 04286000 tracks the main stem. Umiak Outdoor Outfitters runs guided trips on various sections. The Vermont Rivers Management Program and Winooski Valley Park District coordinate access and conservation along the corridor.
