About

White River, Vermont — Gaysville Dam, National Fish Hatchery, Tropical Storm Irene Recovery. Mountain headwaters descend from the Green Mountain National Forest through 55 miles of Windsor and Orange counties, averaging 1,100 CFS with an optimal range of 400–2,500. The White River runs Class II-III from Granville to Rochester through its steepest mountain sections, then mellows to Class I-II as it passes through covered bridge country toward Bethel. At higher flows within the optimal range, the upper mountain section pushes toward solid Class III. Two outfitters — Clearwater Sports and Umiak Outdoor Outfitters — run trips on the river, which carries candidate status for Vermont's Scenic River program. USGS gauge 01144000 tracks the flows that determine whether paddlers face technical Class III drops or manageable Class II water through the headwater sections.
