About

Brazos River — San Felipe de Austin, 1823. From Possum Kingdom Dam through Palo Pinto County, the Brazos River cuts a 20-mile canyon float before opening into 40 miles of ranch country water toward Lake Whitney. At 2,400 CFS average, this section of the 840-mile Brazos runs Class I-II with optimal flows between 300 and 3,000 CFS. The canyon stretch below Possum Kingdom Dam offers the most protected water, while the Palo Pinto to Lake Whitney section spreads wider through working ranch land. Possum Kingdom State Park manages access and outfitting for the upper canyon, and the river carries Texas Paddling Trail designation through this reach. USGS gauge 08088000 tracks conditions for the system, though like most Texas rivers, the Brazos can shift dramatically with weather patterns upstream.
