Spearfish Creek, South Dakota — 1876 Black Hills Gold Rush, 1880s-1910s Mining, 2010s Spearfish Canyon 35-mi Lawrence. Through Paha Sapa — the sacred Black Hills of the Lakota — Spearfish Creek cuts 20 miles of limestone canyon and headwater forest in Lawrence County. The creek averages 120 CFS with an optimal range of 50–300, tracked at USGS gauge 06431500. From Savoy to Spearfish, 12 miles of canyon run passes limestone ledges and waterfalls along the Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway. The upper eight miles offer a more intimate headwater paddle through narrow forest corridors within Black Hills National Forest boundaries. Class I–II water keeps most runs manageable for intermediate paddlers, though spring snowmelt can push flows higher. The 1876 Black Hills Gold Rush brought miners and settlers to these watersheds, but the creek itself has remained relatively undeveloped. Spearfish Canyon Lodge operates guided trips through the main canyon section.
