Wateree River, South Carolina — 1670s-1770s Catawba, 1840s-1880s Logging, 1919 Wateree Dam 75-mi Camden. Long before European arrival, the Wateree people thrived along the river's banks. Siouan-speaking and later merged into the Catawba Nation, the Wateree were one of the largest populations in the central South Carolina Piedmont at the time of European contact, and their towns lined the river near modern-day Camden. The 18th century devastated them through European diseases and conflicts, but the river still carries their name.

Camden rose as the first European settlement on the Wateree's banks, maturing into an interior trading center for wheat, tobacco, indigo, and eventually cotton. To bind that inland trade to the coast, crews began digging the Wateree Canal north of Camden in 1821, an ambitious bid to improve transportation and communication. The river had become central South Carolina's early commercial artery, and the canal was an attempt to extend that reach downstream toward the Atlantic.

From the 1830s through the 1920s, the watershed was logged to support the regional timber industry of the 1850s through 1910s and the railroad expansion of the 1860s through 1910s. Local sawmills, logging drives, and downstream lumber operations were the major operators. The old-growth stands were exhausted by 1910; state forestry conservation began in 1915, and the establishment of state forests in the 1930s ended large-scale logging. Alongside that industry, the first comprehensive hydrological studies took shape—USGS surveys in the 1870s through 1890s, gauging stations established from the 1880s through the 1910s, and state geological streamflow assessments through the 1930s.

The river's defining modern chapter came in 1919, when the Wateree Dam was completed and its waters were impounded into Lake Wateree—the first man-made lake created wholly within South Carolina. The reservoir boasts 216 miles of shoreline. Today the river supports the Camden, Lugoff, and Ridgeway economies, and it is home to Lake Wateree State Park and the Wateree Heritage Preserve.

Modern paddlers know the Wateree in three stretches. The Upper Wateree runs from the Lake Wateree Dam tailrace as Class I water with a striped bass fishery. The Middle Wateree carries Class I flow from Camden to Manchester over bass and catfish. The Lower Wateree runs Class I from Manchester to the Santee River confluence, broad lowcountry water the whole way. In 2014, American Rivers and the Congaree Riverkeeper designated the Wateree as a Blue Trail, creating a paddle trail with improved access and signage from the Lake Wateree tailrace to the Santee River confluence. The Blue Trail has helped build paddling interest in one of South Carolina's most under-utilized big-water fisheries—a river with riffles, not rapids, and a story that runs from the Wateree towns to the working reservoir that bears their name.
