About

Edisto River, South Carolina — Gullah Geechee Heritage. Through Orangeburg and Dorchester counties, the Edisto runs 206 miles as South Carolina's longest free-flowing blackwater river, averaging 1,600 CFS with an optimal range of 300–2,000. The Edisto people called these waters home for millennia before rice plantations reshaped the lower river's hydrology in the 1700s and 1800s. The upper North Fork cuts narrow and intimate through Orangeburg County, while the middle section around Givhans Ferry State Park offers the best paddling conditions. Below Jacksonboro, the river widens and turns tidal on its approach to Edisto Island. Class I throughout, the Edisto earned South Carolina Scenic River designation and supports the state-designated Edisto River Canoe and Kayak Trail, established in 2010. Carolina Heritage Outfitters provides services along the corridor. USGS gauge 02175000 tracks flows that can swing dramatically with seasonal rains, making trip planning essential on a river this size.
