About

Wood River, Rhode Island — 1670s-1770s Frontier, 1840s-1880s Milling, 1990s-2010s Wood River 24-mi Washington County. Through Washington County's Arcadia Management Area, the Wood River runs 24 miles of Class I-II water averaging 180 CFS with an optimal range of 100-400. The upper section from Arcadia to Woodville offers the most interesting paddling — forest-corridor drops that can push Class II at higher flows before flattening to Class I through the lower stretch to Alton. Designated as a Rhode Island Scenic River, the Wood maintains a largely undeveloped corridor through mixed hardwood and pine. At USGS gauge 01117800, flows below 100 CFS make for a rocky scrape while anything above 400 turns the tighter bends pushy. Quaker Lane Bait & Tackle provides outfitting services for paddlers looking to run the system without shuttling their own gear.
