About

Maumee River, Ohio Indiana — 1794 Fallen Timbers Battle, 1840s-1880s Milling, 1990s-2010s Maumee Basin 130-mi Toledo. Between Allen and Defiance counties, the Maumee runs 137 miles of big water averaging 2,800 CFS through Ohio's agricultural heartland. The Grand Rapids to Toledo stretch covers the final 20 miles and holds the river's best walleye fishing, with riffles and rock structure that concentrate gamefish during spring runs. Above that, the Napoleon to Grand Rapids section flows 25 miles through prairie corridor, while the upper 30 miles from Defiance to Napoleon cut through scenic bluffs. At optimal flows between 1,000-5,000 CFS, the Maumee moves substantial volume but stays manageable for experienced paddlers. The river supports a designated water trail with access points at Side Cut Metropark and Farnsworth Metropark. USGS gauge 04193500 tracks conditions for this major Great Lakes tributary that drains much of northwest Ohio's farm country.
