Kokosing River, Ohio — 1810s-1830s Frontier, 1840s-1880s Milling, 1972 State Scenic 41-mi Knox County Mount Vernon. Through Knox County's scenic valley, the Kokosing runs 52 miles of riffles and pools at an average 220 CFS, with optimal paddling between 100–400 CFS on gauge 03136500. Designated an Ohio State Scenic River, it offers three distinct stretches: the upper 15 miles from Fredericktown to Mount Vernon feature the best scenery with consistent riffles and pools, while the middle 20 miles from Mount Vernon to Millwood provide good fishing through the scenic valley. The lower 17 miles from Millwood to the Mohican confluence widen considerably but maintain a wooded corridor. The parallel Kokosing Gap Trail follows much of the river's route, built on the former Pennsylvania Railroad bed. At Class I with riffle structure throughout, the Kokosing rewards paddlers who time their trips to moderate flows — too low and you'll scrape gravel, too high and the riffles wash out into a fast brown push.
