About

Nolichucky River, North Carolina Tennessee — 115-mi, 1977 Major Flood Unicoi, 2010s-2020s Restoration, Cherokee NF. Through Mitchell and Yancey counties, the Nolichucky cuts 20 miles of Class II-III water from Burnsville toward the Tennessee line at 920 CFS average. The upper section from Burnsville to Bald Creek runs mountain valley water with consistent Class II-III features, while the stretch from Bald Creek to Poplar eases to Class II as the river transitions toward the famous gorge downstream. Above the gorge proper, the final North Carolina miles build back to Class II-III as the Nolichucky approaches the state line. Optimal flows run 400-2000 CFS on gauge 03464500, with Blue Ridge Paddling running commercial trips through the corridor. The watershed flows through Pisgah National Forest and parallels the Blue Ridge Parkway in places. Black Mountains Watershed received headwaters conservation designation in 2023, protecting the high-elevation tributaries that feed these upper reaches.
