That long tenure was broken in 1838, when the Trail of Tears forcibly removed most Cherokee from the region.

The river's industrial chapter opened in the 1830s. From the 1830s through the 1920s, the Davidson watershed was logged to feed the regional timber industry of the 1850s–1910s and the railroad expansion of the 1860s–1910s. Local sawmills, logging drives, and downstream lumber operations were the major operators. In the same decades — the 1830s through 1860s — the river powered the mills of Brevard and the local gold-mining industry. Large-scale logging ended only when the old-growth stands were exhausted around 1910, state forestry conservation began in 1915, and state forests were established in the 1930s.

The modern era began in 1916, when the Davidson River corridor was folded into the newly established Pisgah National Forest. The forest was created from lands purchased from the Vanderbilt estate, making it the first national forest in the eastern U.S., and its establishment was led by Gifford Pinchot and the Appalachian Forest Reserve. That federal stewardship, which endures today, reshaped the river's future: the Davidson became a centerpiece of southern Appalachian trout fisheries management and now hosts the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education and a state fish hatchery.

The Davidson River Campground, set near Brevard, North Carolina, anchors a stretch of the forest where camping and outdoor recreation draw visitors into the heart of the Appalachians.
