Apalachia Lake, North Carolina Tennessee — 1943 Apalachia Dam TVA, 1990s-2010s Lake Restoration, 30-mi Cherokee. Long before the concrete, this was Cherokee country. The Apalachia Lake reservoir lies in the ancestral territory of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, the Catawba Indian Nation, and the Muscogee (Creek) Nation. The original river served as a primary travel corridor, a fishing ground, and a gathering place, and those nations maintain cultural connections and treaty-protected rights to this day. The cession framework that reshaped the region ran through the 1817–1819 Cherokee treaties, the 1830 Indian Removal Act, the 1835 Treaty of New Echota, and the forced removal of 1838–1839.
The dam itself belongs to a Depression-and-war-era chapter of southern Appalachian engineering. The Apalachia Lake reservoir was constructed in the 1940s by the Tennessee Valley Authority as part of the WWII- and post-war-era hydroelectric and flood-control expansion of the region. Construction of Apalachia Dam began in 1941 and was completed in 1943, producing a structure 150 feet high and 1,308 feet across the Hiwassee River. The dam is the lowermost of three dams on this section of river, and the Apalachia Hydroelectric Project sits at mile sixty-six. The completion of 1943 remains the lake's defining historical chapter.
Through the middle of the century, operations shaped the corridor. The 1950s–1970s brought TVA and Duke Power flood-control operations, and the 1970s–2000s saw U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recreation and water-quality studies across the watershed. Apalachia Lake belongs to the larger Hiwassee River watershed, which is itself a key part of the broader Tennessee River watershed — a system of impoundments that also includes Fontana Lake, Santeetlah Lake, and Chatuge Lake.
The modern era has been defined by recovery. Since 2010, the NC Department of Environmental Quality, in partnership with the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, has worked to address more than a century of dam-construction, logging, and recreational impacts. That work has included streambank stabilization downstream between 2015 and 2024, native fish restocking — trout and smallmouth bass among them — from 2017 to 2024, and reservoir management by the NC Wildlife Resources Commission from 2020 to 2024. The 2000–2024 NC DEQ dam-safety inspections and the fisheries studies of recent years mark the reservoir's continued stewardship.
Today, Apalachia Lake helps sustain the economies of Murphy, Reliance, and Benton, towns that draw life from the forested corridor around the shoreline. The reservoir has earned a steady reputation among anglers, who prize its clear, cool waters for smallmouth bass and walleye. What began as a wartime hydroelectric project now endures as a working piece of TVA infrastructure and a scenic mountain retreat, where the legacy of 1943 still shapes the river's present-day character.
