About

Black River, New York — 1823-1880s Iron Smelting Lyon Mountain, 1990s-2010s Restoration, NYS DEC 120-mi. From the Adirondack foothills through Lewis and Jefferson counties, the Black River drops 40 miles of progressively steeper whitewater that culminates in the Lyons Falls Gorge — New York's most demanding commercially run section at Class IV-V. At 2,100 CFS average with an optimal range of 800-4,000, this is big water that holds its character across a wide flow spectrum. The Forestport to Lyons Falls stretch runs Class II-III through Adirondack Park's Black River Wild Forest, building toward the gorge. Lyons Falls Gorge itself is the marquee run, where the river cuts through bedrock in continuous Class IV-V drops that require precise boat handling. Below that, the Watertown section offers Class III-IV urban gorge paddling under dam-controlled flows. The Oneida and Mohawk peoples held this territory in the western Adirondacks before European contact, and the river powered tanneries and timber operations from the 1830s through 1900. Adirondack River Outfitters runs commercial trips on the demanding sections, part of a whitewater recreation revival that took hold around 2010.
