Gila Wilderness (America's First, 1924) · Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument

The Gila River flows through the heart of America's first designated wilderness — the Gila Wilderness, set aside in 1924 at the urging of Aldo Leopold. Forty miles of gentle Class I–II water through a landscape of hot springs, ancient Mogollon cliff dwellings, ponderosa pine forests, and volcanic canyon walls. This is the river that launched the American wilderness movement.

Data Quality

River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and trip sections may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level. If you spot an error, use the Improve This River button at the top of the page — your local knowledge is what makes this atlas accurate.
