About

Wharton Creek, New York — 1790s-1810s Frontier, 1832 Wharton Mill, 1990s-2010s Wharton Creek 36-mi Otsego Hamilton. Cedar swamp corridors through Wharton State Forest define the Batona Trail river network, where the Batsto and Wading rivers wind through 30 miles of protected Pinelands terrain in Burlington County. Both rivers run Class I water at roughly 180 CFS average, with optimal flows between 80–300 CFS. The Batsto offers the classic Pine Barrens experience through tight cedar swamp channels, while the Wading runs wider and sandier through similar terrain. The Mullica River system here carries Wild & Scenic designation within the broader Pinelands National Reserve. These are tea-colored waters flowing over sand and through stands of Atlantic white cedar — slow, winding, and roadless for long stretches. Pinelands Adventures provides shuttle service for paddlers working the network. Without a USGS gauge, flow conditions depend on recent rainfall and seasonal groundwater levels.
