Mullica River, New Jersey — 1670s-1770s Dutch Swedish, 1840s-1880s Logging, 1992 Wild/Scenic 50-mi Pine Barrens. Paddlers reading the gauge will find USGS station 01409400 the reference point for the Mullica, where flows average roughly 280 CFS and the optimal window runs from 100 to 600. The river is rated Class I, an approachable grade that suits the two distinct characters of its run. Above, the stretch from Atsion to Pleasant Mills is a cedar swamp classic; below Pleasant Mills, the water turns tidal as it opens into the Great Bay estuary. It is the estuary — undammed, low-impact, draining sandy uplands — that anchors the river's ecological standing in the northeastern United States.
Long before European settlement, the Mullica River watershed was Lenape territory. For thousands of years the Lenape used the cedar-water streams of the Pine Barrens for fishing and travel, moving through an interior that colonial industry would later reshape. The river takes its modern name from Eric Mullica, a Finnish settler, and the surrounding country saw its first waves of European settlement during the Dutch and Swedish period spanning the 1670s to 1770s.
The corridor's industrial chapter ran from roughly 1750 to 1830, when Pine Barrens charcoal and sand fueled iron furnaces and glassworks along the Mullica. Batsto and Atsion villages became centers of Revolution-era munitions production, drawing on the region's abundant bog iron and timber. Those villages survive today as restored historic sites within Wharton State Forest, physical records of an economy built on the Barrens' raw materials. A logging era followed, defining the decades from the 1840s to the 1880s and stripping the watershed in ways later generations would spend a century addressing.
Systematic study of the river came with the first hydrological assessments. USGS surveys of the 1870s through 1890s, the establishment of gauging stations from the 1880s into the 1910s, and state geological streamflow assessments through the 1930s produced the earliest comprehensive picture of Mullica hydrology. Mid-century state water pollution control studies and Clean Water Act assessments from 1972 onward began to confront more than a hundred years of logging, agricultural, and industrial impacts, setting the stage for modern restoration and TMDL programs.
The recovery work continues on the ground. In 2009, the New Jersey Conservation Foundation preserved a 259-acre tract in Washington Township, Burlington County, christened the Turtle Creek Preserve — a parcel that shares a boundary with the state's Swan Bay Wildlife Management Area and knits together a wider corridor of protected land along the river. Regional watershed partnerships have since pursued streambank stabilization, native fish restocking, nutrient reduction, and water-quality improvements through the 2010s and into the 2020s. The Mullica flows through the Pinelands National Reserve and both Wharton State Forest and Bass River State Forest, and it still supports the Hammonton, Egg Harbor City, and Tuckerton economies. Between a federal scenic designation, an estuary of rare integrity, and steady local stewardship, the river remains a working benchmark for coastal conservation.
