Boaters gauge the Androscoggin at USGS station 01053600, where mean discharge runs near 2,800 cubic feet per second and the long-term historical flow sits around 2,520. The river reads best between 800 and 4,000 cfs, a window that carries boats through Class I to III water without either scraping gravel or turning ugly. That mean flow lands comfortably inside the optimal band, part of why the Androscoggin holds a runnable season longer than steeper, flashier New England rivers. Three signature runs define the New Hampshire stretch: the thirteen-mile float through Thirteen Mile Woods, a wilderness canoe classic; the Class II–III whitewater from Errol to Milan; and the gentler Class I–II valley run from Milan to Berlin.

Long before mills or gauges, the watershed was Abenaki homeland. The people used the river as a major travel corridor through the White Mountains, and the name Androscoggin — 'river of rock shelters' — records that older relationship to the water. From those headwaters the river gathers its 3,450-square-mile drainage across two states before reaching tidewater at Brunswick.

Industry arrived in force during the 1840s–1880s. In 1910 the USGS conducted the Androscoggin River Basin Survey in cooperation with the New Hampshire Forestry Commission, documenting a 3,500-cfs minimum-flow requirement for the Berlin Mills, built between 1907 and 1914 and later reorganized as the Brown Company's pulp and paper works. Between 1924 and 1930 the Androscoggin Reservoir Company added a six-dam flood-control and hydroelectric project, and the 1935–1940 River & Harbor Act authorized navigation improvements grounded in that same survey.

The mills came at a cost. Between 1850 and 1960 the paper industry in Berlin, New Hampshire and Rumford, Maine turned the Androscoggin into one of the most polluted rivers in America — a mid-century byword for industrial pollution across the Northeast. The Clean Water Act reversed the decline. From 1965 to 1985, EPA Superfund and Clean Water Act enforcement scrubbed the worst of it, and in 2016 the EPA removed the river from Maine's impaired waters list after 50 years, marking the end of the recovery era. The 1990s–2010s brought the Androscoggin Riverwalk restoration, including Brunswick and Topsham's 1.25-mile, year-round in-town walking loop near the historic Frank J. Wood bridge downtown.

Today the river anchors the Berlin, Rumford, and Brunswick economies and carries protection through New Hampshire's Rivers Management & Protection Program and the White Mountain National Forest. Outfitters such as Saco Bound / Northern Waters run guided canoe trips from Errol, where the wilderness water begins — the same corridor the Abenaki once traveled, now clean enough to paddle for its own sake.
