Jarbidge River, Nevada-Idaho — 2009 Owyhee W&S Wilderness. The Jarbidge rises at the confluence of several small streams in the Jarbidge Mountains of Elko County, Nevada, and runs north toward its meeting with the Bruneau River near Bruneau, in Owyhee County, Idaho. Across a watershed draining roughly 880 square miles, its flow swings sharply with the seasons: high-country snowmelt drives peaks in late spring and early summer before the current settles. Average discharge runs near 45 cubic feet per second, with a runnable window generally between 20 and 100 CFS — modest numbers for a river whose canyons feel far larger than its flow.

Boaters who float the Jarbidge move through two distinct reaches. The upper run, from the town of Jarbidge down to Pine Creek, covers about 10 miles of upper canyon inside wilderness. Below Pine Creek, a longer 15-mile section drops into deeper, more remote canyon before reaching the Bruneau confluence. The whitewater stays in the Class I–II range, but the isolation raises the stakes: this is backcountry paddling through terrain with few easy exits.

Human history on the river runs deep. The canyon was Western Shoshone territory long before contact, and the river's name preserves the Shoshone word Tsawhawbitts, the monster said to inhabit the gorge. In the 1880s, gold mining came to Jarbidge, one of the West's later mining rushes. The surrounding forest saw its own extractive era, logged from the 1830s through the 1920s to feed regional timber demand before the old-growth stands gave out and large-scale cutting ended.

Conservation arrived in stages. In 1964, the Jarbidge Wilderness was designated under the original Wilderness Act, protecting 113,000 acres of some of the most remote mountain terrain in the lower 48. Decades later, on March 30, 2009, segments of the Jarbidge were added to the National Wild and Scenic River System, locking in protection for its free-flowing waters. The river today is bracketed by the Jarbidge Wilderness on one side and Wild and Scenic status on the other.

That legal protection rests on modern measurement. The U.S. Geological Survey operates a streamgage on the East Fork Jarbidge River near Three Creek, Idaho — station 13162500 — along with a gage on the main stem below the town of Jarbidge, Nevada, station 13162225. Those records took on legal weight after the Wild and Scenic designation: in 2013–14, the USGS compiled streamflow statistics specifically to support federal reserved water-rights claims for the Jarbidge segment within the Owyhee Canyonlands Wilderness, published as Scientific Investigations Report 2014–5143. The study translated years of gaging into the quantified flows needed to defend the river's free-flowing character. Today those same gages anchor everything from boater flow forecasts to bull-trout habitat monitoring across the watershed — the practical machinery behind a river whose survival, and that of its rarest fish, hinges on a single cold, clear current.
