About

Niobrara River, Nebraska — 1804 Lewis Clark Confluence, 1991 Niobrara NSR 76-mi Cherry County. From Cornell Dam through 76 miles of Sandhills country, the Niobrara cuts a surprising canyon through Cherry and Keya Paha counties at an average 1,200 CFS. Designated a National Scenic River in 1991, it runs mostly Class I-II water optimal between 300-1,500 CFS on gauge 06461500. The upper 25 miles from Cornell Dam to Berry Bridge pass waterfalls and exposed fossil beds in the canyon walls. Berry Bridge to Rocky Ford covers 30 miles through the deepest Sandhills canyon section, while the final 21 miles to Norden open into wider valley with gentler Class I water. Outfitters including Sunny Brook Camp and Graham Canoe Outfitters serve the corridor, which sees steady traffic during peak season when flows cooperate.
