About

Bowie River, Mississippi — 1820s-1840s Frontier, 1840s-1880s Logging, 2017 Flood-Inundation Maps Hattiesburg 50-mi Forrest. Thirty miles of Class I-II water through De Soto National Forest, Bowie Creek splits into two distinct characters around Hattiesburg in Forrest County. The upper 15 miles from the Seminary area stay narrow and wild through longleaf pine country that the Choctaw knew as part of their Piney Woods Territory. Below Hattiesburg, the creek widens for its final 15 miles to the Leaf River confluence. At 320 CFS average with an optimal range of 100–600, Bowie Creek lacks a USGS gauge, so paddlers rely on local knowledge and recent rainfall to judge conditions. The 2015 De Soto National Forest Longleaf Restoration project has been working to restore the native pine ecosystem along the corridor. Bowie Creek Outfitters provides shuttle service for the route.
