About

Thunder Bay River, Michigan — 1840 Alpena, NOAA Marine Sanctuary. From Atlanta through Hillman to Alpena, the Thunder Bay River runs 70 miles of riffly current through Montmorency and Alpena counties before meeting Lake Huron. At 420 CFS average, it holds fishable flows across a wide range — 200 to 800 CFS optimal — tracked at USGS gauge 04135000. The upper section from Atlanta to Hillman cuts narrow through forest corridors, while the lower stretch from Hillman to Alpena opens wider as it approaches the lake. Thunder Bay River Outfitters services the corridor. The river powered the Thunder Bay lumber industry through the late 1800s, floating white pine logs to Alpena mills. In 2000, Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary was designated to protect the shipwrecks that dot the lake waters where the river meets Lake Huron.
