About

Pigeon River, Michigan — Pigeon River Country SF, 1920s Vanderbilt Estate, 113k Acres. Through Otsego County's Pigeon River Country, this 40-mile river runs from Pigeon Bridge down to Mullett Lake at an average 190 CFS. The upper section from Pigeon Bridge to Elk Hill passes through remote forest where Michigan's elk herd roams — one of the few places in the state where paddlers might spot these animals from the water. Below Elk Hill, the river widens and gentles toward Mullett Lake. At optimal flows between 100–400 CFS (gauge 04128990), the Pigeon offers mostly riffles rather than defined rapids, making it accessible to newer paddlers willing to handle occasional shallow spots. This was Odawa and Ojibwe territory before European settlement. Pigeon River Country Outfitters provides access and rentals for those wanting to paddle through the elk country section.
