About
Little Muskegon River, Michigan — Croton Dam 1908, Muskegon State Game Area. Long before the sawmills, the Little Muskegon watershed lay within the ancestral territory of the Anishinaabe—Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi—across the Newaygo and Mecosta county interior. The watershed served as a primary travel corridor and gathering place, and the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians maintains cultural connections to it today. That relationship was interrupted by the 1836 Treaty of Washington, which ceded the area to the United States for timber and agricultural settlement—the legal opening act for everything that followed.
What followed was the axe. From the 1830s through the 1920s, the watershed was logged to feed the 1850s–1910s regional timber industry and the 1860s–1910s railroad expansion. Local sawmills, logging drives, and downstream lumber operations ran the show; at least eight sawmills stood along the Little Muskegon main stem and its East Branch during the 1865–1910s lumber era, a history documented in the Michigan Rivers Biological Survey. The white pine did not last. The 1910 exhaustion of the old-growth stands, the 1915 start of state forestry conservation, and the 1930s establishment of state forests together ended large-scale logging.
Into that transition came the Croton Dam. Completed in 1908 by the Grand Rapids-Muskegon Power Company, it stands as one of the earliest hydroelectric projects on the Lower Peninsula, impounding the 1,270-acre Croton Reservoir, a major Muskegon River tributary reservoir. The dam reframed the river as infrastructure—trading logs for kilowatts—and became its defining piece of engineering. The Little Muskegon threads narrow, forested meanders on its upper reach from Morley down toward Croton, then broadens and gentles below Croton on its way to the Muskegon River confluence.
The river was also measured. The 1920s Michigan Department of Conservation streamflow surveys, the 1924 establishment of a USGS Little Muskegon River gauging station, and the 1930s CCC stream-crossing surveys formed the first comprehensive hydrological assessments of the basin—early attempts to know a river that had been used before it was understood. Those records set the baseline against which today's flows, averaging around 220 CFS, are read.
Recovery has been the modern chapter. From roughly 2010 onward, the regional DNR, working with local watershed partnerships, has addressed more than a century of logging, agricultural, and industrial impacts. Recent outcomes include streambank stabilization between 2015 and 2024, native fish restocking from 2017 to 2024, a nutrient-reduction strategy implemented from 2018 to 2024, and water-quality improvements from 2020 to 2024. The Muskegon River Watershed Assembly coordinates restoration and water-quality work across the basin. The payoff shows in the water: the lower reaches now hold runs of steelhead, salmon, and smallmouth bass, and the Little Muskegon ranks among the principal Manistee National Forest tributaries. The sawmills are gone, but the current runs vigorous still—claimed now by anglers and paddlers rather than lumbermen.
