Little Manistee River, Michigan — 1938 DNR Steelhead Weir, Huron-Manistee NF. Long before sawmills and weirs, the river flowed through the ancestral territory of the Anishinaabe — the Odawa and Ojibwe — and was known for its steelhead and trout runs. The Little River Band of Ottawa Indians maintains cultural connections and treaty-protected rights to this watershed today. The river drains 145,280 acres of the Lower Peninsula, gathering groundwater that holds its temperature steady across the seasons.

The timber era arrived hard. From the 1880s through the 1920s, the Little Manistee was logged to supply the white-pine industry that defined Manistee County between 1880 and 1910. The Irons and Wellston sawmills, operating from 1885 to 1910, and the log drives run down the river itself were the major operations, moving pine to a lumber trade that leaned on the expanding Manistee & North-Eastern Railway. The white-pine stands were exhausted by 1910. State forestry conservation began in 1915, and the establishment of the Manistee National Forest in the 1930s brought large-scale logging to a close.

Out of that recovering landscape came the river's defining infrastructure. In 1938 the Michigan DNR built the Little Manistee River Weir, the state's first egg-collection facility. The weir blocks adult steelhead and chinook salmon during the spring and fall runs so DNR crews can strip and collect eggs for the state's fish-stocking program. The river earned that role honestly: its groundwater-fed stability makes it one of Michigan's coldest and cleanest streams, and the Blue Ribbon Trout Stream designation confirms the quality of the water the fish return to.

With conservation came protection of the corridor itself. The 1970s brought the Little Manistee River Roadless Area — 37,000 acres of designated wilderness in the Huron-Manistee National Forest — and the river carries a Michigan Natural River designation. More recently, from 2010 onward, regional DNR crews working with local watershed partnerships have addressed more than a century of logging, agricultural, and industrial impacts: streambank stabilization between 2015 and 2024, native fish restocking from 2017 to 2024, and water-quality improvements through 2020–2024.

For paddlers and anglers, the river reads in two stretches. The upper run from Luther to Old Stronach Road is a narrow forest paddle. The lower run from Old Stronach Road down to Manistee Lake is the steelhead corridor, where the runs the weir was built to manage still move. Gauge 04126130 tracks the flow, which averages 280 CFS, with an optimal paddling window of roughly 150 to 600 CFS over a riffle-grade streambed.
