Kalamazoo River, Michigan — 2010 Enbridge Line 6B Oil Spill, 843k Gallons. For a paddler standing on the bank near Comstock, the river reads as a working stream: broad, riffled, and steady. The USGS gauge 04106000 records a long-term average near 1,600 cubic feet per second, with an optimal paddling window between 500 and 3,000 CFS. The gauging station at Comstock was established by the USGS in 1924, part of the 1920s Michigan Department of Conservation streamflow surveys and the decade's Kalamazoo County hydrological assessment. Those early efforts, followed by 1930s CCC stream-crossing surveys, were the first comprehensive attempts to understand a river that people had already leaned on for a century.
Long before bridges and mills, the water served as a highway. The river flowed through the ancestral territory of the region's historical tribal nations, who used it as a primary travel corridor, hunting ground, and gathering place; the 1800s-era treaties, the 1830 Indian Removal Act, and the allotment era from the 1840s through the 1890s established the cession framework. Euro-American settlement arrived in the 1825–1830 era. In 1834, Oka Town and Abijah Chichester floated a raft of lumber downstream to Saugatuck in the first recorded navigation of the river for shipping. A year later, in 1835, the first bridge spanned its current near what is now East Main Street. The village of Kalamazoo was founded in 1829 and settled in 1836, taking its name from the river; the city followed in 1840.
The river built the region's economy. From the 1880s through the 1920s it was logged to feed the 1880–1910 Kalamazoo County hardwood industry, the Michigan Central Railway expansion, and the paper mills that became the founding industry of Kalamazoo. The Kalamazoo and Plainwell sawmills of 1885–1910, the logging drives of 1890–1910, and the paper industry of 1895–1920s were the major operators. The exhaustion of the hardwood stands around 1910, the start of state forestry conservation in 1915, and pollution-control efforts across the 1900–1940s ended large-scale logging. Through those decades the river powered gristmills and hydroelectric dams, watered farmland, and served as the principal water source for the city.
The 2010 Enbridge spill was the modern chapter. The 843,000 gallons — 20,082 barrels — of diluted bitumen fouled 38 miles of river. The 2010–2014 EPA-led cleanup removed 1.2 million gallons of oil and 175,000 cubic yards of contaminated sediment. The restoration that continued from 2014 into the 2020s stands as one of the largest Superfund river restorations in U.S. history. It layered onto older work: the 1960s–1970s USGS Kalamazoo River Basin Study and the 1990s–2010s Superfund cleanup that addressed a century of logging and paper-mill pollution.
Today the river carries two identities. Regionally, DNR crews working since 2010 with local watershed partnerships have pursued streambank stabilization from 2015 to 2024, native fish restocking beginning in 2017, a nutrient-reduction strategy from 2018, and steady water-quality improvements through 2024. The upper corridor runs from Battle Creek to Kalamazoo through an urban landscape; the lower river slides from Allegan to Saugatuck as a scenic finale to Lake Michigan. The stream is known as a steelhead and trout fishery. That same current still threads the landscape that first borrowed its reflecting name.
