Boardman River — Traverse City's Industrial Powerhouse. From Supply Road to Brown Bridge, the Boardman River runs remote forest paddle through Grand Traverse and Kalkaska counties before shifting character completely for its lower stretch through Traverse City to Grand Traverse Bay. The upper section offers 40 miles of Michigan Natural River corridors at 280 CFS average, with riffles rather than true rapids and optimal flows between 150–500 CFS on gauge 04127200. Lumber era log drives from the 1850s through 1890s shaped the Boardman's early character, but the river's most significant transformation came between 2012 and 2020 with the removal of historic dams that restored free-flowing water for the first time in over a century. Trout Unlimited has designated this a conservation priority, and the restored sections now support improved coldwater fisheries. Two outfitters — Boardman River Outfitters and Ranch Rudolf — service the river, though the remote upper stretches see far less traffic than the urban lower section where the river flows directly through downtown Traverse City.
