Big Manistee River, Michigan — Tippy Dam 1918, Hodenpyl Dam 1925, Consumers Energy. Long before the dams, the Lake Branch of the Big Manistee flowed through central Odawa territory in what is now Wexford County. The cold spring-fed creek sustained native brook trout populations that fed Odawa communities traveling through the dense Lower Peninsula interior. That older relationship to the water — subsistence, passage, cold clean flow — would be overwritten twice: first by logging, then by hydropower.

The watershed was logged from the 1830s through the 1920s, feeding the regional timber industry and railroad expansion. Local sawmills, logging drives, and downstream lumber operations were the major operators. On the main stem, the 1880s-1910s era saw extensive white pine logging, and the river drove tens of millions of board feet of timber to the Manistee sawmills before the 1910 exhaustion of the old-growth stands. That exhaustion, the 1915 start of state forestry conservation, and the 1930s establishment of state forests ended large-scale logging.

As the timber ran out, the power era began. Consumers Energy harnessed the river's current with Tippy Dam, completed in 1918, and Hodenpyl Dam, finished in 1925. These impoundments transformed the corridor into a managed system, their reservoirs reshaping the valley between them. In the stretch separating the two dams, the Manistee River Little Mac suspension bridge spans the water — a 245-foot footbridge carrying hikers high above the channel. For all the engineering, the river remains wide and smooth, inviting to casual paddlers who drift its open reaches, though it tightens unexpectedly into fast switchbacks that demand sharper attention.

The broader Big Manistee drains 1,780 square miles across Kalkaska, Missaukee, Wexford, and Manistee Counties, flowing 192 miles south and west through the Huron-Manistee National Forest to Lake Michigan at Manistee. Below Tippy Dam, the river is heavily fished for Pacific salmon and steelhead, while the Upper Manistee River Headwaters Recreation Area protects the upper 36 miles. The Lake Branch itself carries no federal or state designation.

Modern stewardship has focused on the trout water. In 2005, the USFS partnered with Trout Unlimited to restore habitat along the Lake Branch, removing legacy logging-era debris and improving spawning gravel for brown and brook trout. The project improved both fish populations and paddling conditions — a rare instance of a single effort serving anglers and floaters at once. That work built on more than a century of hydrological study, beginning with the 1870s-1890s USGS survey and the establishment of gauging stations in the 1880s-1910s, followed by state streamflow assessments and, later, Clean Water Act and TMDL programs addressing a hundred years of logging and industrial impacts.

Today the Lake Branch runs in two clear reaches. The upper 10 miles, from Marilla to the M-37 Bridge, offer gentle riffles through national forest. Below M-37, 15 miles of wider current carry good fishing down to the Manistee confluence. USGS gauge 04126200 reports an average flow near 140 CFS against a historical mark of 130, with the run holding its best character between roughly 80 and 250 CFS. It is a river shaped by a century of power generation yet still accessible to those who come to walk its banks or float its current, where the legacy of the dam era and the quiet pleasures of recreation share the same water.
