Betsie River — Point Betsie Lighthouse and the 1973 Natural River Designation. The Betsie flowed through Anishinaabe country long before it was surveyed or logged. The three Fires Confederacy peoples — the Odawa, Ojibwe, and Potawatomi — knew it as Beteshiining, 'river of rapids,' a name that references the rapids and cascades along its lower reaches. The watershed served as a primary travel corridor, fishing ground, and gathering place. Today the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians and the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians maintain treaty-protected rights and cultural connections to this watershed, and the river's name is said to be a corruption of an Odawa word.

From the 1830s through the 1920s, the Betsie watershed was logged to support the regional timber industry and the railroad expansion of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Local sawmills, logging drives, and downstream lumber operations were the major operators along the river. That era wound down as the old-growth stands were exhausted around 1910, state forestry conservation began in 1915, and state forests were established in the 1930s.

The river's hydrology entered the record in the 1920s, when the Michigan Department of Conservation ran the first streamflow surveys of the Betsie watershed, followed by Civilian Conservation Corps stream-crossing surveys between 1930 and 1940. A 1960s USGS Betsie River Basin Study identified the major water-quality challenges. In 1991, the Betsie River Watershed Restoration Committee formed as a partnership of 34 public and private organizations, agencies, and municipalities to oversee conservation projects addressing a century of logging and agricultural sedimentation.

The river's most visible landmark stands where it reaches Lake Michigan. The Point Betsie Lighthouse, a 37-foot steel-frame structure on the Lake Michigan shore, was originally built in 1858 and rebuilt in 1889; its distinctive red-and-white tower is visible from Frankfort's harbor and has guided mariners along this stretch of shore for well over a century. In 1973, the Betsie was recognized for protection in Michigan's Natural Rivers designation catalog. It is now a designated Michigan Natural River, with the lower 14 miles protected as a state Natural River corridor.

For paddlers, the Betsie divides into two distinct characters. The upper river, from Grass Lake to Thompsonville, is a gentle meadow paddle. Below Thompsonville, the lower river runs faster through a forested corridor down to Betsie Lake. Flow is tracked at USGS gauge 04126550, which averages about 260 CFS; the optimal paddling window runs from 150 to 500 CFS, and the water reads as riffles rather than technical whitewater. Recent stewardship has continued into the present: since 2010, the regional DNR and local watershed partnerships have addressed more than a hundred years of logging, agricultural, and industrial impacts through streambank stabilization, native fish restocking, nutrient-reduction work, and water-quality improvements. Outfitting is handled locally by Betsie River Canoes & Campground, which offers canoe and kayak rentals with riverside camping. Taken together, the protection binds the river's long arc — from a small inland lake, past a working lighthouse, to a safeguarded mouth — and keeps its current flowing much as earlier generations knew it.
