About

Concord River — 'Shot Heard 'Round the World,' April 19, 1775. From Egg Rock to Old North Bridge, five miles of the Concord River pass through Minuteman National Historical Park in Middlesex County, following the same channel that carried colonial militia past these banks in 1775. The river flows at 320 CFS average through Class I water, with an optimal range of 100–600 CFS on USGS gauge 01099500. Below the historic corridor, eight miles through Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge offer quieter paddling focused on waterfowl and wetland habitat rather than Revolutionary War sites. At 16 miles total, the Concord moves slowly enough that most of its length can be covered in day trips launched from South Bridge Boat House or guided through OARS River Tours. The river is currently under Wild & Scenic River Study, which could formalize federal protection for the corridor that connects Concord's historic downtown to the broader Sudbury River system.
