About

Naval Air Station Patuxent River, 1943. Through 115 miles from Maryland's piedmont to Chesapeake Bay, the Patuxent cuts a forested corridor between Washington and Baltimore that hosts both freshwater riffles and tidal marsh. The upper 15 miles within Patuxent River State Park flow through Howard County headwaters at an average 280 CFS, with optimal conditions between 100–500 CFS on gauge 01594440. Below Laurel, the next 20 miles to Jug Bay maintain wooded banks despite urban pressures on both sides. The final 30 miles widen into tidal estuary through Anne Arundel County, protected as Chesapeake Bay Critical Area and anchored by Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary. Patuxent Paddle Company provides outfitting services for sections that shift from piedmont riffles to brackish marsh paddling. The transition from freshwater to salt occurs gradually through the lower basin, creating habitat diversity that draws both trout anglers to the headwaters and striped bass fishermen to the estuary.
