Naval Air Station Patuxent River, 1943. Hydrology gives the Patuxent its structure. The river rises southwest of Mount Airy, Maryland at an elevation of 823 feet, then descends toward the bay as it gathers a drainage basin of 908 square miles. Across its 115 miles it flows as a tributary of the Chesapeake Bay, and its character is riffles rather than whitewater — no class rating, just moving water best paddled between 100 and 500 CFS. USGS gauge 01594440 reads an average of 280 CFS, with a historical figure near 252 and a recorded maximum around 780, numbers that trace the river's moods across seasons.
The watershed reads in three distinct movements. The uppermost 15 miles run through Patuxent River State Park as piedmont headwaters. Below that, a 20-mile forested corridor carries the river from Laurel to Jug Bay, threading a green seam between Washington, DC and Baltimore. The final 30 miles, from Jug Bay to the Chesapeake Bay, open into tidal estuary — marsh, mudflat, and brackish water where the river meets the sea.
The human record is older than any of it. The Patuxent watershed was Piscataway (Conoy) territory, and Indigenous people inhabited the region for at least 10,000 years. When Captain John Smith explored the Patuxent in 1608, he documented thriving Piscataway communities along its banks — the same year he charted the broader Chesapeake. That early survey placed the river on European maps and set the stage for the contests over land and water that followed colonial settlement.
The modern era reshaped the corridor. From the 1830s through the 1920s, the Patuxent watershed was logged to support the regional timber industry of the 1850s–1910s and the railroad expansion of the 1860s–1910s. Local sawmills, logging drives, and downstream lumber operations were the major operators until the old-growth stands were exhausted around 1910. State forestry conservation began in 1915, and the establishment of state forests in the 1930s ended large-scale logging. Parallel to that industrial arc, the river drew scientific attention: USGS surveys of the 1870s–1890s, gauging-station establishment from the 1880s–1910s, and state geological streamflow assessments of the 1910s–1930s formed the first comprehensive hydrological studies of the Patuxent. Water pollution control studies followed in the 1950s–1970s, and Clean Water Act assessments from 1972 to 2000 addressed a century of logging, agricultural, and industrial impacts.
Aviation history overlays the lower river. Naval Air Station Patuxent River — NAS Pax River — sits in St. Marys County, Maryland, and was commissioned on April 1, 1943 as the Navy's center for service-testing aircraft. The 4,700-acre facility is the birthplace of the U.S. Navy test-pilot school and has been home to the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School since 1945. Three Pax River test pilots — John Glenn, Scott Carpenter, and Wally Schirra — became the first Americans to orbit the Earth, with Glenn's flight on February 20, 1962. Today the river also carries a restoration mandate: in 2010 the Patuxent was identified as a priority restoration watershed under the Chesapeake Bay Agreement, drawing major investments in riparian buffers, stormwater management, and nutrient reduction. Its protected corridor runs through Patuxent River State Park, the Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary, and the Chesapeake Bay Critical Area — an ancient homeland still finding its measure along the water's edge.
