About

Seboeis River, Maine — 1811 First Pine Cutters, 1830s-1870s Log Drives, 1990s-2010s Restoration, Penobscot Nation 30-mi. Through 30 miles of boreal forest in Penobscot County, the Seboeis River runs Class II-III water from its headwater origins to its confluence with the East Branch Penobscot. The upper 10 miles deliver the steepest gradient at Class II-III through dense spruce and fir, while the middle section drops to continuous Class II riffles over another 10 miles. The lower stretch widens as it approaches the East Branch, maintaining Class II character but with more forgiving recovery pools. At 420 CFS average, the Seboeis runs best between 300-1500 CFS according to gauge 01029200. North Maine Woods manages access and permits for this watershed, which requires advance coordination through their gate system. The river flows entirely within the Penobscot River Watershed, draining remote timber country where moose and black bear outnumber paddlers most days of the season.
