About

Penobscot Lumber Capital of the World. Class V drops through Ripogenus Gorge mark the beginning of 16 miles of big water whitewater in Piscataquis County, where dam releases from the Penobscot River system create consistent flows averaging 2,800 CFS. The Cribwork to Exterminator section delivers continuous Class IV-V rapids that demand precise boat handling and strong roll recovery. Below that, Abol Falls to Pockwockamus offers a Class III runout with Mount Katahdin rising directly above the put-in — this is the closest whitewater to the Appalachian Trail terminus in Baxter State Park.

Optimal flows run 1,500 to 4,000 CFS on USGS gauge 01029500, with dam operators typically providing weekend releases during spring and early summer. New England Outdoor Center and North Country Rivers guide commercial trips through the gorge sections. The 2012 Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument campaign brought additional federal attention to the corridor, while American Whitewater maintains active stewardship agreements for access and flow advocacy.
