The watershed splits into two distinct characters. The upper river runs about 40 miles from Franklinton down to Covington through piney woods, the sandy, upland country of Louisiana's Florida Parishes. Below Covington, the lower 30 miles change complexion entirely, sliding through cypress swamp toward the broad sheet of Lake Pontchartrain. The Tchefuncte is a tributary of that lake, and its watershed forms a key part of the larger Lake Pontchartrain basin.

Human use of the river reaches back thousands of years. The Tchefuncte culture, dated from 600 BC to 200 AD, took its name from this river and ranks among the earliest pottery-making cultures in North America. Archaeological sites along the river and the Lake Pontchartrain shore document thousands of years of continuous habitation, a record of settlement that long predates the first European charts.

Those charts arrived in 1699, when Iberville explored the Tchefuncte as he mapped the streams feeding Lake Pontchartrain. For more than a century afterward the river worked as a navigation and commerce route, its mouth so central to lake traffic that mariners had relied on it since the early nineteenth century. In 1832 that importance was fixed in masonry when the Tchefuncte River Lighthouse was built to guide vessels safely from the lake into the river's channel. The light station's long watch speaks to how much trade once moved upstream between the open water and settlements like Covington.

The river's next chapter was written in timber. From the 1830s through the 1920s, crews logged the Tchefuncte watershed to feed the regional timber industry and the era's railroad expansion, with local sawmills, logging drives, and downstream lumber operations serving as the major operators. The old-growth stands were exhausted by 1910; state forestry conservation began in 1915, and the establishment of state forests in the 1930s ended large-scale logging. Early hydrological study followed a parallel arc, beginning with USGS survey work in the 1870s.

Today the emphasis has shifted from extraction to recreation and stewardship. The Tchefuncte is designated a Louisiana Natural and Scenic River, and in 2010 St. Tammany Parish established the Tchefuncte River Blueway Trail, adding marked access points and signage that made it one of the Northshore's best-organized paddling routes. The river still supports the economies of Covington, Folsom, and St. Benedict, and its waters connect to the Bogue Chitto National Wildlife Refuge within the broader Lake Pontchartrain watershed.
