From the piney woods of Franklinton to Lake Pontchartrain, the Tchefuncte flows 70 miles through St. Tammany Parish as a Louisiana Natural and Scenic River. The upper 40 miles to Covington cut through pine forest, while the lower 30 miles open into cypress swamp before reaching the lake. At 280 CFS average, optimal flows run 100–600 CFS on USGS gauge 07375000. The Tchefuncte Culture built ceremonial mounds along these banks thousands of years before European contact, leaving archaeological evidence of sophisticated settlement patterns. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries established the Tchefuncte River Blueway Trail in 2010, marking access points and camping areas for the growing paddle tourism. All Class I water, the river moves slowly enough to spot alligators, wading birds, and the occasional manatee that wanders up from the Gulf.
