Through Daniel Boone National Forest, the Rockcastle carves 50 miles of sandstone gorge between Laurel and Rockcastle counties, averaging 680 CFS with optimal flows from 300 to 1500. The Round Stone to Bee Rock section delivers the best whitewater — Class II-III drops through the Clifty Wilderness area where the canyon walls rise highest. Above Round Stone from Sublimity Bridge, the upper gorge runs easier at Class I-II, while below Bee Rock the river mellows again through Class I-II water to its confluence with the Cumberland. Kentucky designated it a Wild River, and it holds Wild & Scenic Study status. Sheltowee Trace Outfitters operates on the system. The USGS gauge at 03406500 tracks flows that can push well above the optimal range during spring runoff, turning the Class III sections genuinely pushy.
