About

Solomon River, 1860s-70s — Homestead Settlement under 1862 Act. Below Glen Elder Dam, 30 miles of cold tailwater hold the Solomon River's best fishing through Mitchell and Cloud counties before the prairie takes over. The dam transforms what would otherwise be a warm-water Great Plains river into something cooler and more stable, running at 520 CFS average with an optimal range from 200 to 1,500 CFS. From Beloit to Minneapolis, 40 miles of limestone bluffs break up the grassland monotony, while the final 50 miles from Minneapolis to the Smoky Hill confluence open into wider valley bottomland. This was Pawnee territory before the Solomon Valley Homestead Rush of 1867 brought settlers to the 180-mile system. Glen Elder State Park manages the tailwater section and operates a marina, while Waconda Lake Recreation Area covers the reservoir itself. USGS gauge 06876000 tracks the flows that determine whether you're floating or walking the shallows.
