The Cheyenne and Arapaho used these plains as buffalo grounds before the Smoky Hill Trail brought the Butterfield Overland Despatch through in 1868. From Hays to Ellsworth, the river widens across 100 miles of prairie, while the lower 120-mile stretch from Ellsworth to Junction City runs in a deeper channel. Class I water throughout makes this a float for covering distance rather than technical paddling.
