About

Neosho River, Kansas Oklahoma — 1820s-1840s Osage Frontier, 1894 Opened, 1990s-2010s Neosho Water Trail 463-mi. Council Grove served as neutral ground where Osage and Kanza tribes held councils before becoming the most important provisioning stop on the Santa Fe Trail from 1821 to 1880. The Neosho River runs 460 miles through Kansas, averaging 1,800 CFS with an optimal paddling range of 300–3,000 CFS on gauge 07179730. The 60-mile stretch from Council Grove to Emporia cuts through the Flint Hills transition zone and offers the best paddling, while the 80 miles from Emporia to Burlington open into wider channels through prairie farmland. Class I-II water throughout, with the lower 100 miles building to bigger water approaching the Oklahoma line. The Neosho River Water Trail Association coordinates access and information for the designated water trail that follows much of the historic route. Morris and Lyon counties hold the upper reaches where limestone bluffs and tallgrass remnants mark the old council grounds that made this crossing essential to westbound wagon trains.
