Volga River, Iowa — 1850s Volga German Settlement, 5,700-ac Volga River SRA, 2010s Little Switzerland 50-mi Fayette. Through Fayette and Clayton counties, the Volga River runs 50 miles of Class I water at 220 CFS average, with optimal flows between 100–600 CFS on gauge 05412400. The upper 15 miles flow through Volga River State Recreation Area, established in 1964 on former Ho-Chunk hunting grounds. Below the state recreation area, the river continues another 20 miles through farm valley to its confluence with the Turkey River. The state recreation area office coordinates outfitter services for the protected corridor, while the lower stretch passes through agricultural land. At these flows and gradients, the Volga offers straightforward paddling without technical challenges.
