Illinois Nature Preserve · Mackinaw River State Fish & Wildlife Area

The Mackinaw is one of the last free-flowing rivers in Illinois — never dammed along its entire 130-mile length. Flowing through the heart of the central Illinois prairie, the Mackinaw offers gentle riffles over sand and gravel, wooded bottomlands, and a wild character that belies its location in the state's most productive farmland. The wooded corridor from Congerville to Mackinaw holds the best scenery before the river widens on its run to the Illinois River at Pekin.

Trip sections
Lexington to Congerville — 20 mi, upper prairie stream
Congerville to Mackinaw — 25 mi, wooded corridor, best scenery
Mackinaw to Pekin — 30 mi, wider river to Illinois River confluence

River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and trip sections may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level. If you spot an error, use the Improve This River button at the top of the page — your local knowledge is what makes this atlas accurate.
