About

Kankakee River, Illinois Indiana — 1670s French Fur Trade, 1860s-1880s Grand Kankakee Marsh 500,000 ac Drained, 130-mi. Through Kankakee County, this 90-mile prairie river cuts a surprising canyon section that defines its best paddling. The Kankakee River State Park stretch offers Class I-II water where limestone bluffs replace the typical Illinois flatland — a geological anomaly that earned the river its Illinois Scenic River designation. At 2,200 CFS average flow with an optimal range of 500–3,000 CFS, the Kankakee runs substantially larger than most regional rivers. Above the state park, the Momence to Aroma Park section follows classic Class I prairie character, while below the canyon the river widens again toward Wilmington. Chicagoland Canoe Base operates on this system, serving paddlers from Chicago who drive south for moving water. USGS gauge 05527500 tracks the flows that make the canyon section worth the trip.
