Apple River Canyon State Park protects the best eight miles of the Apple River, where Class I-II water cuts through Illinois Driftless Area limestone bluffs in Jo Daviess County. At 210 CFS average flow, the canyon section offers the most interesting paddling on this 53-mile tributary to the Mississippi. Above the park, the Stockton to Canyon stretch covers 15 miles of gentler riffles through farmland. Below the canyon, the final 20 miles widen into an easy float through broader valley terrain. Optimal flows run 100–400 CFS on USGS gauge 05419000. The Driftless designation reflects the unglaciated topography that creates the canyon's steep-sided character and spring-fed base flows that keep the Apple running when other Illinois streams dry up.
