About

Payette River, Idaho — 1889 Louis McCall Squatter, 1948 Cascade Dam, Black Canyon 1922. From Shoshone-Paiute territory in the Weiser River headwaters, the North Fork Payette drops 48 miles of Class III-V+ whitewater through Valley and Gem counties. The Cascade section holds the most notorious water — Cascade Falls runs Class V+/VI depending on interpretation, with several other Class V+ drops that make this stretch a proving ground for expert boaters. Below that, Banks to Horseshoe Bend offers the most popular section at Class IV-V, while the lower North Fork Payette mellows to Class III-IV through scenic canyon country. At 1,100 CFS average (optimal 800-2,500), this is demanding water that requires solid Class IV skills as a minimum. The North Fork Kayak Classic, established in the 2000s, has made this a mecca for elite paddlers testing themselves against some of Idaho's most technical rapids. Cascade Raft & Kayak and Idaho Guide Service run commercial trips for those with the experience to handle sustained Class IV water. USGS gauge 13247500 tracks flows that can swing dramatically with snowpack and irrigation demands.
