Peace River, FL and the 1565 Menéndez Settlement. The river runs a Class I course, 106 miles from the Lake Wales Ridge to Charlotte Harbor on Florida's Gulf Coast, through Polk and DeSoto counties. USGS gauge 02295637 records an average flow near 680 CFS, with a historical figure of 612 CFS; the recommended paddling window runs 200 to 2000 CFS. The Peace River Canoe Trail is a Florida Designated Paddling Trail, and it splits naturally into two runs: Bartow to Bowling Green, a 30-mile upper stretch that is narrow and intimate, and Bowling Green to Arcadia, 40 miles that make up the prime fossil-hunting reach.

The river's earliest documented role was a martial one. The 1565 expedition of Pedro Menéndez de Avilés — the same campaign that founded St. Augustine that year — used the Peace River as a base for the 1567 Matanzas massacre of French Huguenots, an episode that bound this quiet Florida stream to the violent contest between Spain and France for the New World. That contest played out against a far older human presence: the Calusa had occupied the corridor for millennia, and the Seminole Wars of the 1830s brought fierce conflict to the river's banks. The name commemorates the eventual treaties.

Industry arrived next. From the 1830s through the 1920s, the Peace River watershed was logged to feed the regional timber trade of the 1850s–1910s and the railroad expansion of the 1860s–1910s. Local sawmills, logging drives, and downstream lumber operations were the major operators. The old-growth stands were exhausted by 1910; state forestry conservation began in 1915, and the establishment of state forests in the 1930s ended large-scale logging for good.

The river's hydrology was documented in parallel. USGS surveys of the 1870s–1890s, gauging stations established between the 1880s and 1910s, and state geological streamflow assessments of the 1910s–1930s were the first comprehensive hydrological studies of the watershed. Later, state water pollution control studies of the 1950s–1970s and Clean Water Act assessments from 1972 to 2000 reckoned with more than a century of logging, agricultural, and industrial impacts. Restoration and TMDL programs are the major current outcomes, informed by work like the 2017 SWFWMD Peace River Comprehensive Watershed Management Plan.

Today the river is best known for what surfaces along the Bowling Green to Arcadia stretch. The Peace has become internationally recognized as a fossil-hunting destination: Pleistocene-era shark teeth, mammoth molars, and other prehistoric remains erode from the banks, drawing amateur paleontologists from around the world. Also along the river stand the Edison and Ford Winter Estates, named for the famous friends who wintered there and now operated as a museum. Full-service canoe and kayak rentals are available through Canoe Outpost — Peace River in Arcadia, the natural launch for paddlers coming to hunt fossils or trace the layered history of a stream whose very name is a record of the colliding worlds that met along its banks.
