Florida's First Federally Designated Wild and Scenic River. Long before surveyors drew designation boundaries, the Loxahatchee watershed was home to the Jaega and Ais peoples, who lived along these waters for thousands of years. The river gave them freshwater access near the coast and supported rich fisheries. European contact in the 1500s and the colonization that followed devastated those populations, ending a way of life that had endured across millennia.

The nineteenth century brought conflict and industry in turn. The surrounding land witnessed the Second Seminole War, and the Loxahatchee Battlefield was finally listed in the National Register of Historic Places on April 5, 2024, formally honoring the fighting waged along the river's banks. Not long after the war era, the timber economy arrived. From the 1830s through the 1920s, the watershed was logged to feed a regional timber industry that ran from the 1850s into the 1910s and a railroad expansion spanning the 1860s to the 1910s. Local sawmills, logging drives, and downstream lumber operations were the major operators. The old-growth stands were exhausted by 1910; state forestry conservation began in 1915, and the establishment of state forests in the 1930s ended large-scale cutting.

The river also bears the marks of deliberate engineering. The historic Masten Dam, first built in the 1930s, underwent a careful restoration that neared completion in July 2017, part of a broader effort to manage flows and safeguard the river's fragile freshwater ecology. That work sits within a longer arc of recovery. Since 2010, regional agencies working with local watershed partnerships have addressed more than a century of logging, agricultural, and industrial impacts. Streambank stabilization ran from 2015 to 2024, native fish restocking from 2017 to 2024, nutrient reduction strategy implementation from 2018 to 2024, and water-quality improvements from 2020 to 2024.

The 1985 designation remains the river's defining chapter. Congress recognized the extraordinary ecological value of an undeveloped river corridor, and the protected 7.6-mile segment became the state's first federally designated Wild and Scenic River. It runs from River Bend Park downstream to Jonathan Dickinson State Park, crossing Martin and Palm Beach Counties. The designation was a response to real pressure — canals and development pressing against a waterway that had somehow stayed wild.

Today the Loxahatchee endures as a corridor where battlefield memory, Depression-era infrastructure, and pioneering conservation converge. Paddlers can run the full Wild and Scenic stretch from Riverbend Park to Jonathan Dickinson State Park, or take the shorter two-mile family paddle at Loxahatchee River Battlefield Park. Whatever the route, the reward is the same: the cypress quiet that the river's first stewards fought to preserve, still holding along a protected ribbon of wild Florida.
