First Atlantic Salmon Return to Connecticut River System in 100+ Years. The Salmon River drains a compact watershed in central Connecticut, flowing 10.4 miles to its confluence with the Connecticut River. The USGS streamgage 01193500 records an average of roughly 240 cubic feet per second, with a historical mean near 216 CFS and recorded peaks reaching 830 CFS. Paddlers find their best conditions in the 100 to 600 CFS range, and the river reads as Class I–II water — an approachable run rather than a technical one.
Long before any of that gauging began, the watershed was Wangunk territory. For the Wangunk people, the river's annual Atlantic salmon runs were a critical seasonal food source, tying the community's calendar to the fish that surged upstream each year. That older relationship makes the later collapse of the runs — and the century of silence that followed — all the more stark.
The industrial era reshaped the valley. From the 1830s through the 1920s, the Salmon River watershed was logged to feed the regional timber industry of the 1850s to 1910s and the railroad expansion of the 1860s to 1910s. Local sawmills, logging drives, and downstream lumber operations were the major operators. The old-growth stands were effectively exhausted by 1910; state forestry conservation began around 1915, and the establishment of state forests in the 1930s finally ended large-scale logging. The river's hydrology drew scientific attention across the same span, with USGS surveys in the 1870s–1890s, gauging stations established in the 1880s–1910s, and state streamflow assessments through the 1910s–1930s forming the first comprehensive studies of the river. Later, 1950s–1970s state water pollution control studies and Clean Water Act assessments from 1972 onward began addressing more than a century of logging, agricultural, and industrial impacts.
The restoration story runs through this recovered landscape. After the 1975 stocking, the Connecticut River Atlantic Salmon Commission carried the effort forward, stocking fry and improving fish passage. A fishway on the Leesville Dam on the Salmon River proved crucial to the program's success, giving returning fish a route past the barrier that had once helped sever the runs. The breakthrough came in October 1991, when the first Atlantic salmon returned to spawn — the first of their kind in the entire Connecticut River system in over 100 years. Full restoration has remained elusive, but the river continues to support seasonal returns of sea-run Atlantic salmon.
Today the Salmon River threads through protected ground, with Salmon River State Forest and Day Pond State Park along its course. Paddlers typically run two sections: Day Pond to Comstock Bridge, a Class I–II forest run, and Comstock Bridge down to the Connecticut River, an easier Class I passage through the lower valley. For all the ambition attached to its name, the Salmon endures as a quiet emblem — a short Connecticut stream that measured, in a single 1991 homecoming, the reward of restoration patient enough to last decades.
