About

Nathan Hale Born on the Natchaug, 1755. From Natchaug State Forest through Windham County, the Natchaug runs 30 miles of Class I-II water at an average 280 CFS. The upper section from Phoenixville to Diana Pool holds the better gradient and technical interest, flowing through state forest land with occasional Class II drops. Below Diana Pool to Willimantic, the river mellows to Class I as it approaches its confluence. The Connecticut Blue-Blazed Trail system crosses the watershed, connecting hikers to several river access points. At optimal flows between 100-600 CFS, the Natchaug offers reliable paddling through much of the season, with USGS gauge 01122000 providing current readings. Scott's outfitters services the river for those seeking guided trips or equipment rentals.
